Genetically engineered (GE) food has become part of our society for a while now but does that make it safe? How does it compare to it's organic counterpart? More and more people have suspicion about the healthiness of this genetically engineered food so I was able to find some research which was performed on those seeds and this is what I found.
According to a report which was given to MomsAcrossAmerica by an employee of De Dell Seed Company, which is Canada's only non-GMO corn seed company, the differences between the two types of food can be clearly seen. For example:
natural corn has 437 times more calcium then GMO corn, 56 times more magnesium than GMO corn and 7 times more manganese than GMO corn. But that's not all. GMO corn has something called glyphosate and natural corn does not. Now, what is glyphosate? According to Wikipedia:
"It is one of the most widely used herbicides. It is commonly used for agriculture, horticulture, and silviculture purposes, as well as garden maintenance (including home use)."Now factor in that in other countries, per their reports, glyphosate is blamed for different birth defects and cancers, this should be disturbing news. Glyphosate is also responsible for killing off the good bacteria in your gut (once ingested) and promoting the growth of the bad one.
Another factor to consider is that this glyphosate becomes part of the plant etself, meaning it's inside the plant so it cannot be washed off. So once you eat it, it ends up in your gut where it weakens your total health and if you consider that 80% of your immune system depends on a healthy ratio of good and bad bacteria which resides there, this is bad news.
Here is another factor I have to mention:
"The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "safe" level for glyphosate in American water supplies is 0.7 ppm. In Europe the maximum allowable level in water is 0.2 ppm. Organ damage in animals has occurred at levels as low as 0.1 ppm. At 13 ppm which is contained in the GMO corn, it is more than 18 time the "safe" level set by the EPA."
But that's not all. There is another disturbing piece of information about the GMO corn. It contains extremely high levels of formaldehyde. Per at least one study done by Dr. Huber, 0.97 ppm of formaldehyde ingested was toxic to animals. So how much does the GMO corn contain, you ask? 200 times that amount!
Keep in mind that GE crops are not the most "tested" ones in the world, despite of what you are told by the companies that produce them. Monsanto Company doesn't allow independent researchers access to their patented seeds making it nearly impossible for independent research to take place. As a matter of fact, GE foods have never been proven safe for human consumption over a lifetime. Not only that, there is also no safety monitoring once the GE item has been approved. So this means that no country is monitoring and tracking reports of any potential health effects right now.
So what can you do? You can fight for labeling of the genetically engineered foods. Irregardless of where you live you can get involved or donate to these labeling efforts and talk to your local organic producers and stores to make sure they are actively involved as well.
