Some facts about Sciatica

What is sciatica?
Sciatica is pain from irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve we have in our body.
Sciatica pain is typically felt from the low back to behind the thigh and it usually radiates down below the knee.
Causes of sciatica
The most common result for sciatic pain is due to a lumbar disc herniation that directly presses on or against the nerve itself. Now just so you know, anything that causes the irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve may produce symptoms of sciatic pain.

Some other causes of sciatica may include the irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone, tumors, infections and injury. There are many other reasons you may be having sciatic pain. There are times that sciatica may occur because of irritation of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy.

Common symptoms of sciatica
Sciatica pain is a burning sensation, numbness, or sometimes a tingling feeling from the lower back area or sometimes even from the upper buttock area down to the back of the thigh.

While sciatica is often associated with lower back pain (lumbago), it can be present without low back pain. Cases of severe sciatica can make walking difficult if not impossible. Walking may also cause pain in a person that has sciatic nerve problems.

Diagnosing sciatica
Sciatica is diagnosed by performing a physical exam accompanied with X-rays and tests such as CT or MRI scans.

Sciatic treatment options
Bed rest is what is commonly told to patients with sciatic pain. Although seeking the help of a professional Chiropractic office, your doctor can help you by putting together the best possible services needed to insure your recovery and the alleviation of your sciatic pain.
What is the outlook (prognosis) for patients with sciatica?
Depending on the cause of your sciatic pain and the length of time you've had the pain, you and your doctor together can come to a possible prognosis of your situation.

Preventing sciatica
In order to prevent sciatica you need to prevent injury. A regular workout routine may help you avoid any possible future injuries.
Seek your doctors’ advice before beginning any type of exercise program.
